York Local Guide

Getting to know York

The practical bits, sorted. Parking, trains, hospitals, venues and the questions guests ask us most.

Parking

York's medieval centre wasn't built for cars. Parking inside the city walls is limited, so a little planning goes a long way.

  • York has several Park & Ride sites around the ring road with frequent buses into the centre — usually the easiest option.
  • City-centre car parks fill up quickly on weekends, race days and during the Christmas markets.
  • Check your property listing for the nearest recommended car park.

Getting around

Once you're here, you'll barely need transport at all — York is one of the most walkable cities in the country.

By train

York station is on the East Coast Main Line, with direct trains to London King's Cross, Edinburgh, Leeds, Newcastle and Manchester.

On foot

Most of the main sights sit within the city walls and are a short walk apart.

By bus

Local buses and Park & Ride services connect the centre with the university, hospital and outskirts.

By air

Leeds Bradford Airport is the nearest airport; Manchester Airport is reachable by direct train.

Business travel

Beyond tourism, York has a strong professional base — the university, York Hospital, insurance and rail all bring regular business visitors.

  • Our city-centre homes are walkable from the station, which makes early starts and late arrivals easy.
  • Every home has fast WiFi and a dedicated workspace.
  • We can provide invoices for company bookings.
